MICROSOFT BUYS GITHUB FOR $7.5 BILLION

Aruba, June 4, 2018 - Microsoft Buys GitHub for $7.5 Billion, Moving to Grow in Codings New Era

Microsoft said on Monday that it was buying GitHub, a software development company used by 28 million programmers, for $7.5 billion.

The move is a bid by Microsoft to gain ground in the internet era of software development, where applications increasingly run on remote data centers” so-called cloud computing.

Amazon is the leader in the cloud market so far, but Microsoft has transformed itself in recent years to become a strong No. 2 as a supplier of cloud computing services. Its key Office productivity applications and data center software are available in cloud versions.

Satya Nadella, Microsofts chief executive, said the deal was a step toward accelerating the companys transition to cloud computing and to adding artificial intelligence to many of its applications. Both are priorities for Microsoft and for other major technology companies like Amazon, Google, Salesforce and IBM.
Developers are the builders of this new era, writing the worlds code,€ Mr. Nadella wrote in a blog post. And GitHub is their home.€

GitHub, founded in 2008 and based in San Francisco, was created largely as a community for software developers to share programming tools and code. It has been a champion of the open-source software movement, with its ethos of freely sharing code.

The open-source model was once anathema to Microsoft, the leading commercial software company. But Microsoft has come to embrace open-source tools. Microsoft is the most active corporation on GitHub, with more than two million contributions of code to GitHub projects.

GitHub, seeking to establish a profitable business, has increasingly hosted corporate software projects on its platform. Those projects have typically used open-source software development techniques while keeping some code proprietary. The companies involved with GitHub own the resulting software applications.
